This song was entirely inspired by my guitarist-pard, Sam Clay , who mentioned that he thought "Beat my Wings" would be a good song title, then he left the porch, and went to get something... and by the time he got back, I had written the melody and half the lyrics! He suggested the verse lyrics, which I find divinely arresting.
The story of the solo is one of interest. First we had Isaac Prost (age18!) take that last half of the solo on his violin, then he went to India, and Michael and I loved the melody of the solo so much that we wanted to double the length of it, so we asked the virtuoso viola player Marc Christian to play that same melody, for the FiRST half! What amazes me is that the violin and the viola have almost identical sound!
lyrics
Beat My Wings
(verse)
I am an an angel.
My mother told me so
and if my mother said so
then it's true
And I have tried to live my life
In spite of all the strife
Tried to live the way she taught me to:
(she taught me to)
Beat My Wings
Beat My Wings
I can fly far away from these troubles today
because I can Beat My Wings
(I'm going to)
Beat My Wings
Use these things
I could fall in despair but I'll rise in the air
because I can Beat My Wings
(bridge)
Sometimes I get bogged in the mire
Forgetting all that's good and true
Feeling the flames of the fire
Then remember what it is I can do
(two A instrumental, repeat bridge)
Beat My Wings
Beat My Wings
I've been given this gift
I'll ascend, I will lift!
Because...
I can Beat...My... Wings.
