about

This is our version of the double-pedigree masterpiece by Astor and Borges. Imagine Brad Kay's and my joy at discovering the existence of this for our annual Lit Show! And then the joy got pushed up skyward for me, when I realized I could bring in Michael Jost to play his magnificent classical guitar on it for the show. And that now it would be in our repertoire forever. Yes.

lyrics

Alguien Le Dice al Tango
w: Luis Borges m: Astor Piazzolla

Tango que he visto bailar
contra un ocaso amarillo
por quienes eran capaces
de otro baile, el del cuchillo.
Tango de aquel Maldonado
con menos agua que barro,
tango silbado al pasar
desde el pescante del carro.

Despreocupado y zafado,
siempre mirabas de frente.
Tango que fuiste la dicha
de ser hombre y ser valiente.
Tango que fuiste feliz,
como yo también lo he sido,
según me cuenta el recuerdo;
el recuerdo fue el olvido.

Desde ese ayer, ¡cuántas cosas
a los dos nos han pasado!
Las partidas y el pesar
de amar y no ser amado.
Yo habré muerto y seguirás
orillando nuestra vida.
Buenos Aires no te olvida,
tango que fuiste y serás.

Speaking of the Tango
by Jorge Luis Borges (English translation)

I have seen the Tango danced against a yellow sky
By those who are capable of that other dance..
The dance of the knife, the switchblade.
The dance more mud than water
One that is like a wolf whistle from a passing car

Flippant and carefree, always looking straight ahead
The one that recalls your valor
The one that that made you happy
The one I remember...
Memory... then I no longer remember

Since that time,
How many things have happened to us!
All the games, and the grief
Of loving and of not being loved
When I die
I will fly over our lives
Buenas Aires... I will not forget you
The Tango that was...and ever will be.
